It can be quite difficult to remain focused on work all day, right?  Given that there are co-workers to chat with and interesting online stories to catch up on.  Those distractions can make for some incredibly unproductive times! 

Here are some ways to get focused and stay focused throughout your day:

·         Get a great night’s sleep – Getting a good 7-8 hours of sleep before a busy workday can mean the difference between being frustrated and being focused!

·         Make your to-do list – Make a priority list, this can help tie up loose ends from unfinished work, which will help you keep focused on completing MORE work!

·         Follow a 20-20-20 rule – After sitting hours at a computer screen your eyes get tired and have a harder time focusing.  Reset by staring at a distant object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes!

·         Take breaks – Taking just a few moments of a break from work can help you stay focused much longer, whereas not moving away from work can actually make you lose a lot of focus!

·         Try caffeine – Studies have suggested that caffeine in moderation can help boost focus, in particularly in those who are more fatigued.

·         Minimize the multi-tasking – When trying to do too many things all at once, you can actually be LESS efficient because you are more easily distracted by too many things.

·         Train that brain – People who can be easily distracted {you know who you are!} may benefit from some “brain training” exercises, like those activities you see advertised on TV that will stimulate your brain waves!

·         Meditate – By meditating, you are actually practicing focus, which will help with concentration in your daily activities.

·         Find a quiet place – Too much background or surrounding noise can cause the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which can impair brain function and disrupt focus!

·         Keep work at work – Aside from giving that brain a bit of a break, research suggests that some downtime away from a problem can actually help you solve that problem!

·         Work offline – Checking that email inbox or Facebook too much will definitely hinder your attention, drawing your focus away from the work at hand.  So be sure to minimize distractions by working offline!

·         Get regular exercise – How many times have we heard how healthy exercise is to our bodies? Well it is also great for our brain!  Scientists believe that exercise aids in stimulating the release of chemicals in the brain that rewire memory circuits and thus improve the brain functions and enhance that FOCUS ability!
